تاریخچه لیکا در جهان سبکدانههاي طبيعي از سالهاي دور مورد توجه بشر بوده است. روميان در احداث معبد پانتئون و ورزشگاه کلوزيوم از نوعي سبکدانه استفاده کردند و در قرن ششم نيز در ساخت اوليه کليساي صوفياي استانبول سبکدانه بکار رفته است. در قرن دوم پس از ميلاد، مهندسين رومي سبکدانه پوميسي را در ساختمان پانتئون روم بکار بردهاند. پس از گذشت ۱۰۰۰ سال، سبکدانه در ساختماني در واتيکان بکار رفت. کاربرد بتن سبکدانه پس از توليد سبکدانههاي مصنوعي و فرآوري شده در اوايل قرن بيستم وارد مرحله جديدي شد. در حدود سال ۱۹۱۷، هايدي در کانزاس ايالات متحده، روش توليد صنعتي رس منبسط شده را با استفاده از کوره استوانهاي چرخان ابداع نمود و اين فرآورده هايديت نام گرفت. بدليل امکان فرآوري در توليد، اين محصول داراي ويژگيهاي منحصر بفرد بوده و مورد استقبال فراواني قرار گرفت. در اين مدت بيش از ۱۵۰ پل و ساختمان در ايالات متحده و کانادا با اين نوع بتن، مورد بهرهبرداري قرار گرفت. بزرگترين بناي بتن سبکدانه، ساختمان اداري ۵۲ طبقه با ارتفاع ۲۱۵ متر در هوستون تگزاس ميباشد. در ايران پس از آگاهي از مزاياي توليد سبکدانه در کشور واحد توليد ليکا توسط بخش خصوصي در سال ۱۳۵۷راهاندازي شد. امروزه سبکدانههاي مصنوعي به ويژه ليکا در کشورهاي مختلف با نامهاي تجاري گوناگون توليد ميگردد.
