خانواده برنولی :این خانواده سوئیسی، یکی از متشخص ترین خانواده ها در تاریخ ریاضیات بود. سابقه خانوادگی آنها با دوبرادر، یاکوب برنولی و یوهان برنولی آغاز می شودو با پسران یوهانبه نامهای نیکولاس، دانیل و یوهان II و نیز پسر یوهان II، یوهان III و نوادگان دیگرادامه می یابد. سابقه خانوادگی آنها را می توان از سال ۱۶۵۴ تا ۱۸۶۳ (حدود ۲۱۰ سال) پی گرفت. به جهت اختصار فقط به کارهای دو برادر اول می پردازیم. یکی از اثرگذارترین چهره ها در گسترش مرزهای دانش مقاومت مصالح خانواده برنولی بوده است. این خانواده فرهیخته ابتدا ساکن هلند بودند و سپس به فرانسه مهاجرت کردند. اواخر قرن هفدهم میلادی بود که ریاضی دانان برجسته ای در این خانواده ظهور و بروز یافتند. در سال 1699 میلادی، فرهنگستان علوم فرانسه با اکثریت آراء، دو برادر به نام های یاکوپ و یوهان برنولی را به عنوان اعضای رسمی غیر ملی خود پدیرفت. اوائل قرن هجدهم میلادی ، حساب بی نهایت کوچک روبه گسترش بود که نخستین بار توسط گوتفرید ویلهلم ون لایب نیتس ، ریاضی دان و فیلسوف شهیر آلمانی ، ابداع و بعدها توسط یاکوپ و یوهان برنولی به شکل اصول بسط و گسترش یافت. آنها برای نمایش عملکرد این ابزار جدید، مثال هائی از مکانیک و فیزیک ارائه کردند . یکی از این کثال ها که یاکوپ برنولی به آن پرداخت و امروزه نیز به نام او شناخته می شود ، شکل منحنی خیز یک تیر الاستیک است که با این کار ، فصل مهمی از مکانیک اجسام کشسان را رقم زد. در جائیکه گالیلئی و ماریوت در مورد مقاومت تیرها تحقیق نمودند ، یاکوپ برنولی خیز آنها را محاسبه کرد ، اگرچه این کار او چیزی به دانش آن زمان در مورد خواص فیزیکی مواد نیافزود. یوهان برنولی ، بزرگترین ریاضی دان عصر خویش بود ، در زمینه حساب دیفرانسیل صاحب تحقیقات نابی بود. او نخستین محققی بود که اصل تغییر مکان های مجازی را بصورت روابط ریاضی دقیق و واضحی بیان کرد. یوهان برنولی ۲۷ ژوئیه ۱۶۶۷ - ۱ ژانویه ۱۷۴۸ ریاضی دان اهل سوییس و یکی از چندین ریاضی دان عضو خانواده برنولی بود. او به خاطر مشارکتهایش درحساب دیفرانسیل و انتگرال شهرت دارد و استاد لئونارد اویلر بودهاست. یوهان در بازل متولد شد. پدرش نیکولاس برنولی، یک عطار بود. یوهان تحصیلات خود را در دانشگاه بازل در رشته پزشکی آغاز کرد. پدرش میخواست او در رشتهتجارت تحصیل کند، اما او به تجارت علاقه
