در سال ۱۳۴۲ نخستین کارخانه نورد فولاد کشور به منظور تولید انواع میلگرد ساده، میلگرد آج دار و نبشی، در شهر اهواز تأسیس گردید. خطوط تولیدی با نصب تجهیزات و مونتاژ ماشین آلات با ظرفیت سالیانه ۶۵ هزار تن، در سال ۱۳۴۶ راه اندازی و به تدریج سایر کارگاه ها و فرایندها به آن افزوده شد. پس از انقلاب با شکوه اسلامی این مجموعه صنعتی با داشتن خطوط و محصولات متنوعی از فرایندهای نورد و فولادسازی به نام گروه ملی صنعتی فولاد ایران نام گذاری شد. با اجرای طرح های توسعه و بازسازی خطوط تولید طی سال های ۱۳۷۱، ۱۳۸۳و ۱۳۸۵ ظرفیت تولید افزایش و کیفیت محصول، سیستم های بهره برداری و کنترل تولید ارتقاء یافت. اکنون این مجتمع عظیم با ظرفیت سالیانه ۱,۴۳۵,۰۰۰ تن فرآورده های فولادی و ۴۳۰,۰۰۰ تن شمش فولادی ضمن تأمین بخش عمده ای از نیازهای کشور، یکی از صادرکنندگان مهم محصولات فولادی می باشد.
