حوزه‌های وظیفه‌ای اصلی مدیریت، صرف نظر از نوع و سطح مدیریت، عبارتند از: برنامه‌ریزی، سازماندهی، هدایت، بکارگماری و کنترل. نویسندگان وظایف مختلفی را برای مدیریت برمیشمرند و یک فهرست قطعی و مورد قبول همه دانشمندان این حوزه وجود ندارد. در اینجا به اکثر عباراتی که به عنوان وظایف مدیریت مطرح شده‌اند اشاره می‌شود. ۱. برنامه ریزی (Planning) تعریف : برنامه ریزی عبارتست از فرایندی دارای مراحل مشخص و به هم پیوسته برای تولید یک خروجی منسجم در قالب سیستمی هماهنگ از تصمیم‌ها. شرح : برنامه ریزی یکی از وظایف مدیریت است. برنامه‌ریزی دارای انواع و اقسام مختلفی است و در سطوح مختلف مدیریت شکل‌های متفاوتی از آن استفاده می‌شود. ۲. بکارگماری (Staffing) تعریف : کل وظیفه مربوط به انجام امور مربوط به نیروی انسانی در سازمان شامل جذب، استخدام، آموزش، فراهم‌آوری و نگهداشت شرایط کاری مناسب. شرح : بکارگماری یکی از وظایف مدیریت است. مدیریت منابع انسانی نیز حوزه‌ای است که در وظیفه بکارگماری می‌گنجد. ۳. بودجه‌بندی (Budgeting) ۴. تصمیم‌گیری (Decision Making) تعریف : تحلیل گزینه‌های مختلف در مورد یک موضوع و گزینش یک یا چند گزینه. شرح : برخی نویسندگان تصمیم‌گیری را یکی از وظایف مدیران برمیشمرند. برخی دیگر تصمیم‌گیری را یکی از قدم‌های سایر وظایف مدیریت می‌دانند. به عنوان مثال در برنامه‌ریزی، انتخاب گزینه‌های مختلف در مورد اهداف، است…. ۵. رهبری (Leading) ۶. سازماندهی (Organizing) تعریف : گروه‌بندی فعالیت‌های ضروری برای دستیابی به اهداف، تخصیص هر گروه از فعالیت‌ها به یک مدیر به همراه قدرت و اختیار لازم برای نظارت بر آن، و تأمین هماهنگی افقی و عمودی در ساختار سازمان. شرح : سازماندهی یکی از وظایف مدیریت است. سازماندهی شامل فعالیت‌هایی برای طراحی ساختار سازمانی، تعیین مسئولیت افراد و شرح وظایف آنها، طبقه‌بندی مشاغل، تفویض اختیارات و . . . است. ۷. سیاستگذاری (Policy Making) ۸. کنترل (Control) تعریف : وظیفه مدیریتی کنترل عبارتست از اندازه‌گیری و اصلاح عملکرد برای دستیابی به این اطمینان که اهداف سازمان و برنامه‌های تدوین شده برای دستیابی به آن اهداف به سرانجام می‌رسند. شرح : کنترل یکی از وظایف مدیریت است. کنترل مدیریتی معطوف به کل سازمان است اما در قالب روش‌های مشخص برای کنترل مالی، کنترل کیفیت و . . . نیز
